UN Security Council Urges Release of Detained Aid Personnel in Yemen

(MENAFN) The United Nations Security Council on Friday denounced the continued imprisonment of UN staff members, humanitarian workers, and diplomatic personnel by Yemen’s Houthi movement, as the second anniversary of the large-scale detentions carried out in June 2024 nears.

In an official statement, the Council stressed its firm position against the arrests, declaring: "The members of the Security Council reaffirmed their condemnation in the strongest terms of the detentions by the Houthis of personnel from the United Nations system, national and international non-governmental organisations, civil society organisations and diplomatic missions."

The Council voiced profound concern regarding the condition and well-being of those it described as unjustly held, noting that the arrests have occurred through several detention campaigns since 2021. It also renewed its call for the "unconditional, safe and immediate release" of all detainees, including 73 United Nations personnel.

Furthermore, Council representatives welcomed the ongoing efforts undertaken by the UN through every available avenue to obtain the release of those detained. They emphasized that "all threats to those delivering humanitarian assistance are unacceptable and worsen the dire humanitarian situation in Yemen."

The statement also highlighted the responsibilities of all parties involved in the conflict under international humanitarian law. It stressed the necessity of ensuring complete, secure, and unrestricted humanitarian access while safeguarding the security and freedom of movement of UN personnel and affiliated workers.

Additionally, the Council cautioned that Yemen’s humanitarian emergency is likely to deteriorate further in the absence of a political settlement. According to the statement, more than 22.3 million people across Yemen currently require humanitarian support and assistance.
