Government condemns shooting incident in KwaMakhutha

Government strongly condemns the brutal shooting in KwaMakhutha, KwaZulu-Natal, which occurred on the night of Tuesday, 22 September 2026, claiming eleven lives and leaving three people injured.

Law enforcement agencies are pursuing every available lead to ensure that those responsible for this senseless act of violence are brought to justice. 

Government calls for calm and appeals to the public not to take the law into their own hands following this catastrophic incident. Members of the public with information that may assist with the investigation are encouraged to come forward and cooperate with the police.

We must stand together against violence and criminality within our society. No one should live in fear, and Government remains resolute in its commitment to protecting all South Africans and restoring safety in affected communities.

All sectors of society, including community leaders, civil society organisations and local authorities, must unite in the fight against all forms of crime. Sustained cooperation between communities and law enforcement is vital to preventing further violence and building safer communities.

Government conveys its deepest condolences to the families, friends and loved ones of the deceased and wishes those receiving medical treatment a swift and full recovery.
